Coasts are diverse dynamic morphological systems encompassing spectacular arrays of windswept beaches, tidal inlets, rocky coasts and coral reefs. Coasts contain a range of habitats. Their beauty and importance are second to none and are considered one of our favourite destinations.

Coastal environments are transient, continuously reshaped by the natural processes of the waves, tides, surges, erosion and deposition. There is increasing pressure on our coasts from the competing needs of commercial, recreational and residential interests. Careful planning and comprehensive assessment is required to preserve these complex coastal dynamics and to safeguard our magnificent coasts for future generations. As global trade increases, more and more goods are handled by ports. This again increases the demand for enhanced operability and capacity.
